Did Somebody Say "Bust a Move?"

Dee Lite - Groove is in the Heart

Miami, Miami, You've got style I'm sure I posted this before.

Toni, Tony, Tone!

Tony Hawk's Proving Ground

You may or may not know I love skateboarding video games. I continue to rack up hours of procrastination thanks to Tony Hawk's remix for PSP. (And, yes, I still play video games on a Playstation Portable).

Tony Hawk's Proving Ground, aka Tony Hawk 9, has arrived for Playstation 3. IGN gave the latest adventure a "decent" rating. I'm excited nonetheless.
The images look damn good. Can't wait for it to come out on PSP.

The thing about writing a first draft...

is that there's a high chance things can get messy and out of control.
Yup.
There's a high chance something like that can happen.

In cases such as this one, it's best to leave a path of destruction for the clean up crew (aka the 2nd draft).

Broyard's One Drop

The other night on CBS late news I caught a segment about Bliss Broyard's new book ONE DROP: My Father's Hidden Life--A Story of Race & Family Secrets. Broyard writes about her father Anatole Broyard, famous NYTimes literature critic who passed away in 1990. He was a Black man passing as white for most of his life.

Bliss, along with her brother, found out their father's secret while he was on his deathbed.

Apparently folks suspected Anatole's ancestry for years, and he was often criticized for being harsh to Black writers.

Interesting stuff.

Steve Nash...

...is the bomb, and he appears in NYTimes Play magazine.

LRG The Friday The 47th Hoody

This hoody sold out quick at Karmaloop.
I'm assuming they're back in stock, because it's back up for $108.

Now, we all know it only takes a few bad apples to spoil the bunch. You KNOW some knuckle head is gonna jump somebody wearing this hoody. Oh boy...this thing screams "trouble."

Ummm

Watching the World Series between Colorado and Boston.

The camera has panned the crowd many, many times, and I have yet to see a Black person.
What's up with dat?

The Boys - Where dey at now?

You remember The Boys? Hakim was my favorite. Cute. Cute.

Well, the brothers live in West Africa now and record under the name Suns of Light. Hakim is grown, still cute, (but a lil' creepy). The music is pretty good.

It's cool he doesn't shun his style from back in the day. Check out his myspace page.

A Good Man Is Hard to Find

Flannery O'Connor has a hefty body of work: 31 short stories and two novels. She passed away in 1964 at the age of 39 of complications from lupus.

I read her short story A Good Man Is Hard to Find this morning and discovered that it's still sitting in my gut 13+ hours later. That's pretty amazing, considering the amount of crap I shovel into my brain over the course of a day.

I've read only three of her works, but I like how she approaches race, family, gender, religion, and violence. There's nothing predictable, nothing simple, or clean. The stories unfold in a jarring way that doesn't disorient the reader. I'm in the midst of the world, watching the characters being ushered to a violent or sad fate. Her female characters are often racist and annoying, but I think O'Connor does a great job capturing grotesque horrible people living in modern (circa 1940s) southern America. The truth is lots of people are assholes, and they do a great job of showing us they're assholes without any help. O'Connor steps aside and lets us see the good and the bad in these people.

I wonder if and how her work would've changed if she lived to see Black folks struggle, fight. I wonder where her writing would've taken us if she witnessed Martin, Kennedy, and Malcom's assassination.

Blip # 1

I want to get better with each play I write. Each screenplay. Each piece of fiction. I want to gain a deeper understanding of the craft. And I want the work to reflect that growth.

New stuff in the works

And you be like, "yo, cra, what's up? Where you been at?"
and I say, "peeps, it's real hectic 'round here, right now. This whole writing business is no joke."

And we both chuckle.

I need to improve my updating skills. It's true. If I can't compose a lengthy, philosophical diatribe, I should at least post a phrase, word or thought that captures life in cra-land.

I started a new label called "blip." Posts with those tags will consist posts with only a fragment, a piece, a slip of thought.

Gumbo

I'm finally feeling a lil' better. No more drugs or wads of soiled tissues for the rest of the year. (fingers crossed)

A few things are popping:

My favorite gossip blog Young, Black, and Fabulous has a new look. Sista gurl upgraded from a blogspot address to her very own site.

Here's a bag that's too expensive for my grad student income:

And a pair of gorgeous sneakers:

I was introduced to the work of playwright Charles Mee
via a reading assignment for playwriting workshop. I've never seen a production, but I enjoyed what I've read so far. Now I must consume the rest. Lucky for me Mr. Mee has decided to make most of his work available on his site for free, so we have no excuse for not checking it out.

And...that's it for now.

Sniff, sniff

Having a cold makes it difficult to get any work done. You take lil' blue pills that are SUPPOSEDLY non-drowsy, yet you pass out, ass-up on the living room floor. Hmmm. Or maybe those weren't Sudafeds I took...

I have LOTS of stuff to finish this week. My horoscope told me I'm not allowed to half-ass it.

Oh. Boy.

Dove's Onslaught

Having grown up in a skeptical society, I wonder what Dove's up to with their Real Beauty ad campaign. There has to be an ulterior motive, right? I mean, the moment I trust this company, the moment I truly believe this company accepts, promotes, and celebrates all types of women, they'll decide it's time to "jazz" up the Dove image and hire Beyonce to strut around a set. Right?

Well, I hope not.

Dove's latest commercial Onslaught is some interesting stuff.

If ever I have enough money...

I discovered Showdown Muscle Cars while on a google hunt.
This is a BAD ASS ride.
