Kicks

I'll always have a soft spot for 20th century hiphop fashion, and Spike Lee's films capture each phase from She's Gotta Have It (1986) to Bamboozled (2000). I posted Mark Ecko's tribute to Spike's work Sept. 28th, and now hypebeast.com announced Nike's contribution with limited edition Air Jordan Spizike. Sneaker junkies will probably snatch 'em all for ridiculous prices so I'll just admire the pictures. For those who don't know Mars Blackmon was a character in She's Gotta Have It played by Lee and resurrected for Air Jordan commercials.

The Hotness

Three of the four finalists on So You Think You Can Dance appeared on Tyra's show a few weeks ago.
Benji holds a special place in my heart but Donyelle is a force to be reckoned with. Her first two dances got all kinds of "hot damn!" up in it.

And why is Tyra screaming like a drunk aunt when Benji dances? Their freak dance is too funny.

Upgrade

Short post this morning because it's late and I don't have much to write.

Blogger has a new format in the works. I'm sure you've seen other folks slowly adopt the new stuff. I'm waiting until they work out a few glitches then I'll join the masses. I'm way excited about being able to label posts. Each post is a quilt of many patterns and textures so it'll be nice to know where I mentioned a particular link or thought.

I also have to get better about tagging sources. I'm starting to post more pics on the blog for those of you who require visual stimulation and each pic requires a "this is where I got it from" shout out.

Oh, and this blog has been inducted into Technorati.

Speak of the devil . . .

So a friend sent me the link to Maxwell's Myspace page. I'm dying to hear the new music but can't get the player to work. Has anybody heard it? Anybody?!

I'm sure it's groovy, right?

Maxwell's light skinned twin?!

I remember soul singer Robin Thicke from his earlier song When I Get You Alone. I liked that song but didn't hear anything from him after that. Well he has returned to the scene with major amounts "hot damn!" appeal. I l-o-v-e his new cd! I have two favorites: Got to Be Down and Lost Without You (that's his wife in the video--hot!). If you go to his website, you'll hear "Got to Be Down". For late 70s and early 80s babies, Robin's father is Growing Pains star Alan Thicke. Robin looks like him, too. Who knew Alan Thicke had this much soul in his genes.

Speaking of soul, I caught an episode of Soul Train last Saturday. During the 70s, for those who don't know, Soul Train was the dance show to see bad ass Black folks get down. Even in the 80s when I was a wee lil' lamb I learned dance moves from this show. It's been on the air for almost 40 years. Imagine my shock when I saw lame Black folks doing lame dance moves last Saturday. If you measure Black America's dancing ability based on the people from this show, we're in trouble. Apparently, sistas have adopted a deflated wiggle/ booty bounce move while men have adopted a weird pop&lock, moon walking hybrid. We still know where the beat is but we no longer know what to do with it.

~sigh~

Janet J. is the baddest mofoe!

I used to know the entire choreography for "Miss You Much" (sans the chair sequence, moms wasn't having her chairs swung around the living room)

Stylin

From what I understand Ludacris is wearing Gucci shades in this pic. He's been rocking these everywhere. I'm not a label whore by any means but I like 'em. That is until this afternoon when I was in the West Village and I spotted a lanky white boy sportin' em. The Gucci shades did not look good on him ergo I do not like the shades. Seeing stick boy in these shades has forced me to rephrase my initial statement: Luda looks good in the Gucci shades ergo I like the shades.

My boy(toy?) Sufjan Stevens has 5 CD holiday box set arriving Nov. 21st. I'm intrigued by this new project but I gotta admit I will be disappointed if he doesn't continue with the 50 states / 50 concept albums project (bring on the Kansas album, Sufjan!!!). Out of all the strikingly attractive hipster boys I *heart*, he's the only one who could do it--and do it well.

OutKast's latest from the Idlewild CD is titled Morris Brown and I frickin' love it. Big Boi has recently become one of my favorite mc's for a few simple reasons: he does these cute lil' dances when he performs, and he writes great lyrics. I still love Andre but he needs to start performing.

In theater land: I know it's only fall but I got an offer tonight to do something wild and crazy in June. It's too soon to give details but I will say I'm excited about it whether I end up doing it or not.
